Today we were watching the CBS sunday morning show and there was a story about Harry Houdini. Houdini died on Halloween. His real name: ERIC WEISS. Gregg Grunberg's characters name on ALIAS was ERIC WEISS. He was always trying to impress the girls with magic tricks. He even elluded to Houdini being an ancestor in one episode.

Best & Worst Shows on Television
Worst:
EDIT------- Entertainment News shows like Inside Edition, Access Hollywood, Insider, Entertainment Tonight. Talk about CREATING DRAMA!!!
Pretty much everything on MTV & VH1- Why do we care what teenagers are doing in their spare time? Why do we care about rich teenagers 16Th birthday parties? Why do we care about how big celebrities houses are and how many cars they have? Why do we care about a random group of people living in a house together? Is it because it makes us feel better about our normal lives? No. Stop watching people!!! If you keep watching, they'll make more and more of these ridiculous shows!! It's called Created Drama!! At the end of the show, are you entertained? Or are you mad at some character who cheated or lied or whatever? Does it really matter to you what they do? It shouldn't.
Conveyor Belt of Love & The Bachelor/Bachelorette- The lowest of the low. I really don't like dating shows. If any reality show it fake, it's dating shows. Although sometimes its fun to watch how naive people can be and how far people will go to be famous. But really. Do you really think that "true love" can be found on a show like this? Really? Common Sense, people.
Eastwick - Just plain dumb.
ALL celebrity reality shows-refer to the statement for VH1/MTV... Who cares about Paula Abdul's issues... How is this entertaining? Why do people think watching the Playboy girls is entertaining? Why are these people even considered celebrities? And what's the deal with this show called Million dollar real estate or something? Why is this even a show? Personally, I don't care about Hulk Hogan's daughter, Paris Hilton's best friends, who dates some weird guy named Flavor flave, Rayj, or Brett whatshisface, or what Lindsey Lohans parents are doing, or ..........
CSI: Miami- (Sorry Mom, it's just terrible!) I love crime dramas. They are entertaining. But this one is so bad, there's a group on facebook called "CSI: Miami haters," and another one called "Horatio Caine Haters," both of which I am a member of. I understand the concept of theatrical lighting. I think it can make or break a show/movie/play etc. But when you overdo it by having the orange and red sunshine come in all four sides of a building and have everyone look like they take daily baths in spray tan, you've gone a little overboard. I've never been to Miami, but I pretty sure there's only one sun and one moon and the same amount of daylight, just like everywhere else. Top that off with two of the most over dramatic, ridiculously naive and stupid actors I've ever seen! 1. David Caruso. Worst Actor on Television! Apparently his neck is broken and he's blind. Also, he can only speak in cliche's. 2. That black lady who plays the medical examiner. She's so ridiculous!! She talks to the dead bodies and acts so UGH!! It's like she's lived a sheltered life until now and all of a sudden, she's in the murder capital and "doesn't understand why someone would do such a thing." It's your job to see this everyday! You should be immune to it by now!! I just want to slap some modern sense into her! I get mad watching that show. It's a waste of time. I'd rather watch paint dry.
that Trailer remodeling show on CMT - First of all, it's a show about remodeling trailers. (Enough said, right?) Second, 30 seconds of the hosts voice is enough to make any southerner cringe. He fits the stereotype of dumb redneck all to well.
(personal dislike) - singing contest shows - Okay, I have to admit, I watched the first few seasons of American Idol. It was entertaining to watch people who thought they were the best singers ever make a fool of themselves. Now, every news and cable network has their own version and people are going on these shows with the intention of making a fool of themselves. It's not funny anymore. It's just sad.
(another personal dislike) - Craig Ferguson - I can't stand his voice and I don't think he's funny at all!
Best:
Okay, Alias will forever be the best show on television. It was cancelled years ago and to be honest, I'm glad. Dragging out a show like that for more the 5 or 6 seasons kills the storyline and turns it into mush. Shows like this should be short lived. I think it makes them even better. Another example is:
Lost - Now this is entertaining. (And yes, I know it's not real!) You take a real fear and create magic with it! Every one's afraid of being in a plane crash. Throw in a little "Lord of the Flies," and a few magical themes and you've got a great show. A show that makes you yearn for the next episode is a great show. At the end of last season, I thought I cannot wait 9 months to know what happens next! A show that has so many themes and mysteries that you have to watch it several times and each time you learn something else you didn't know... that's a great show. I'll hate to see it go off this season too, but I'm sure my curiosities will be satisfied by the end. (At least I hope they will be!)
Fringe - wicked cool! This show takes CSI a step further... into weirdness. I love it!!
CSI - enough said. Although I don't watch that much now that Grissom left. Another reason is because we have an old Tivo and another show of more importance comes on at the same time. (We're getting a new Tivo this week) CSI has become one of those shows that is on pretty much all the time on one station or another. Just flip the channels and you'll find it somewhere... Everyone airs it's syndicated version. It's always entertaining.
CSI: NY - same as CSI. Great show. Love Gary Sinese... He's an all around great actor (voice of the Marine commercials) And I should mention that neither CSI nor CSI:NY have over dramatic lighting or actors... (In CSI:NY, they use a lot of blue lighting filters, but it looks much more realistic than Miami.)
Criminal Minds - Excellent Crime Drama.
Intervention - Good real life show. Although I wish they would do a little more after the intervention at the end of the show. They should spend more time on the addicts after they've been through rehab. They occasionally have a "where are they now" show, which covers that, but sometimes, all you see is them still in rehab or just out. It would be interesting to see how they are doing one year later or something like that.
Amazing Race - The best reality contest show on TV. This show tests speed, compatibility and will. (Survivor does not.) The contestants actually have to work hard to stay in the game. It's not a popularity contest. And they get to see the world too.
Dirty Jobs - I just love Mike Rowe. He's so funny. I like to see the everyday Joe who gets dirty and works hard for a living. Mike makes that guy look like a genius by "trying" to do these everyday jobs.
On the Fence about:
Private Practice - I really like this show, but the problem I have with it is that the characters should be suicidal by now with all the drama and tragedies that goes on in their lives... sleeping with each other, sleeping with each others' parents (WT??), everybody have brain tumors, someones baby gets cut out of their belly (again, WT??), etc. Its just way to unrealistic for me.

Random thoughts from my tired mind.
I finished Alias yesterday. It was kind of sad. Now I have nothing to watch while I'm home by myself... Maybe I'll start Lost when Mom gets done with it... I also watch Fried Green Tomatoes yesterday. GREAT MOVIE! I can almost quote it completely. My favorite scene is the food fight scene. My DVD is the extended version and includes the deleted scenes. It also has a documentary on making the movie. It was filmed in Juliet, GA, a no red light "town" with about 25 people. I plan on getting the book soon. There's also a cookbook.
Wes starts his new job this week. Did I mention that before? I can't remember. He got a job at the airport here in town. (Yeah, the one with only two flights to Atlanta each day - closed on holidays...) He's going to be working at the place where planes get serviced and gased up, called the FBO, I think. All the planes that come in use this service. All the privately owned planes (the doctors), the ASA planes (Delta), and the Air Force pilot training planes from Columbus, to name a few. That's about all I know. Wes is looking forward to it. He starts on Thursday. He quit the TV station yesterday. Yesterday, we gave Phoebe a bath and then planted an Apple tree in the yard. I also planted some seeds and flower bulbs in the planter along the carport. (I don't know what you call it.) Today he took apart the bathroom, recaulked the tub and is attempting to replace the faucets. This house is old and it's giving him fits. We've been to Lowe's twice in as many days, and we have to go back tomorrow...
I've been thinking lately about a new career... I've been in TV for over 8 years. I'm kind of sick of it. (As if that isn't obvious) I don't know if it's related to the recent poorly chosen career move that I made. Possibly. But in general, I'm ready for a change. I told myself for years that I wanted to go back to school. I've considered finishing my bachelor's in Broadcasting, but I have NO desire to do that anymore. I want a regular job, but not a desk job. I have been toying with a few options. Here they are:
x-Ray Technician
Court Reporter
Landscaper
Totally different, I know. Based on the current economy, the medical field is pretty much the only stable field out there. I have no desire to become a nurse (never have). I don't want to deal with respiratory therapy (I've seen enough with Papaw). Physical therapy is more schooling than I'm willing to commit to. I've figured out that x-ray is the farthest thing from the blood and gore I can get. I really liked Biology class (although I liked the plant section more than anatomy, but learning how the body works was cool). The program at MCC would be tough because I'd have to be a fulltime student and do clinicals all summer. I wouldn't be able to work full-time if at all, so I'll have to wait till Wes gets out. The only pre-requisite/core classes I don't have yet are A&P 1&2. I can go ahead and take them in the fall & spring of next year and be ready to start the program in August '10, providing Wes will be done or almost done and I can maintain a job for at least that first semester.... (It's too late to get in for this fall.) There are so many ifs..... Mom's going to see if I can shadow someone at the hospital soon. Maybe that will help me decide. A&P would be interesting and even if I don't do radiology, they may come in handy for something else.
I've always enjoyed typing and writing. Court reporters make great money and there's specific school programs for this, some even online. Problem is, this is a small town and the demand around here is non-existent. I'd still think it be fun though. That'd be a job with normal hours, for sure. Con: Desk job.
Landscaper. I like to cut things down in the yard. It's fun. I love my new pair of clippers! (Just ask the Azalea bushes in the back yard, or what's left of them). I like plants and being outside in the yard. (Not big on cutting grass although weedeating is fun. Don't like the idea of being sweaty hot all the time, but maybe I can get over that) I have a friend in the business here. I may call him up one day and talk to him about it. He owns his own business and has done quite well, I'm told.
The church is starting a CO-ED SOFTBALL TEAM!!! ! YEAH!!!! I signed up on Sunday.
Gotta go. Going running in the AM. It's been raining for 4 days!

Therapy
I'm watching my two favorite episodes of Alias.... the last two episodes of Season 3. It's the ones where they find Sydney & Nadia's mother (who's supposed to be dead, again...), Vaughn proposes to Sydney on the plane and then they skydive into Russia together and save the world... Long Story.... I found another Lost/Alias connection. One of the guards who works with the Covenant in these two episodes is the same guy as the "listening post" guy... The one with the eye patch that lives at the satellite station. It's nice to have nothing to do. I've been going back and forth to the hospital this week. More worried and emotional than anything else. (Mom's been going a hundred times faster than I have. She should have been the one getting a message today. Not me.) I've been trying to stay on course with my running. It's hard, but running helps me deal with it all.
Papaw is slowly getting worse....
I've been praying that he'll be out and well for his birthday and get together next Saturday. I don't know if he'll be out of the hospital. It's unlikely. I handmade some cards for him to cheer him up. I got out the crayons. It was kinda fun. Therapy is more like it. They actually look like a 7 year old drew them. When I gave them too him, he was just waking up. I taped them to the wall where his other cards were. Ken is here this weekend staying with Papaw. I'm grateful for that. Mom was able to get some much needed rest.
Beth, I've been checking your blog round the clock this weekend. Several people at church have been too. We're praying for positive results......

another JJ Abrams Revelation....
Alias Season 3: Sydney & Vaughn are stuck in North Korea. A "Mr. Cho" helps them get out.
Mr. Cho is played by none other than the guy who is the multi-named doctor in Lost's Orientation videos.

Holding it together is becoming harder....
Today I attempted to rollover my 401K. It was ridiculous! I've done this several times in the past and I have never had this much trouble. No one will give me a straight answer. I was not in the right mindset to deal with it anyway. I have completely given up and we are going to move the money into a IRA or something.
Lost comes on tonight. Right now, I'm watching Alias. Lots of 47's..... Trying to clear my mind and think about other things besides work. I wanted to run today, but last night at the gym, my shins and calfs started hurting, so I figured it would be a good idea to sit out today. The weather is supposed to be nice this weekend. I'll be outside as much as possible. Honk if you see me... just not when you're right behind me because that scares me....
Papaw's 80th birthday is March 4th. We are planning a get-together for him. More details to come.....

Darn Caleb!!!!
This guy I work with, Caleb (who's a smoker BTW) has been coughing up lungs for weeks. He's always sick and I've been avoiding him at all costs and using hand sanitizer and Lysol like an addiction. Well, that wasn't enough! This morning I woke up and my throat felt like someone had rubbed it with sandpaper all night. I've barely got a voice.
Anyone know where I can get a big plastic bubble??? Or a good work at home job? Or how about a new job for Caleb!!! Maybe he needs a plastic bubble.
:)
We didn't go to church today. Wes is avoiding me so he won't get sick. I'm on my fourth episode of Alias. It's only 3:00. He went and got me some medicine. I'm feeling a little better.
Next week is Dad's birthday! He'll be 53. Next week is also the twins birthdays. They'll be 10. There birthday party is Saturday. Adam's birthday is the week after that.
Thinking about getting a bicycle......

New Toys!!
Wes & I decided to buy a new digital camera yesterday. We've been wanting one for years. I currently have a Nikon n65 (35mm SLR) and we have a little handheld 5m digital camera. My Nikon is not practical anymore for vacations...carrying the camera plus a bag full of film... So we went ahead and bought a Nikon D70!!!! It's my dream camera. We found a nearly new one on ebay for a good price. I'm so excited!!!! We also got a Photobank a few weeks ago. It's an 80GB portable hard drive with card slots. You can store pictures from memory cards on it. It's better than having a bunch of memory cards to keep up with. I can't wait to use it!! I'm going downtown to play with it as soon as we get it...
This weekend is Pete & Kelly's showers. I wish I could be there. I hate missing stuff. Since we've already bought most of our Christmas, I have to hope that they don't receive the same thing that we've already bought them.
They went to the football game Friday night. My mom was hoarse from yelling so much. They had a great time. Pete saw a lot of people he hasn't seen since High School. In fact, that's the first home game he's been to since he graduated. They beat Taylorsville 42-40 in the last seconds of the game. They are in the playoffs now. I think they've only lost one game.
Since I started watching Alias after my surgery, I decided to finish it. I'm currently on season 4. It's my least favorite season. But ironically, my favorite episode comes from season 4. When I'm done with Alias, I'm going to watch Lost again. Season 3 comes out on DVD Dec. 11 (I've already ordered it) Season 4 starts in February. (Can't Wait!!!)

Learn Something New Everyday.....
You know how everyone has their favorite movie or TV show, one that you can watch over and over and never get tired of it. (For my mom, it's Star Trek) Since my surgery, I've been watching Alias over again (for the umpteenth time). Everytime I watch it, I learn something new. I'm nearly done with Season 2 and so far, I've found dozens more references to the number 47. I also realize there are several actors in Alias who appear in JJ Abram's other productions, other than the obvious ones (The pilot from Lost, etc). I'm sure no one cares, but it's interesting to me. I would love to one day work on a show like that (Lost, Alias, etc).
On a different subject, I have this book I've been reading off and on when I'm at the gym. It's called "This I Believe." It's a compilation of essays written in response to a NPR radio program of the same name. NPR asked people to write an essay about what they believe in, their life's "credo," only positive responses. This was done in 1951. They revisited the series and broadcast another program around 2000. People like Colin Powell, Carl Sandberg, Helen Keller, Jackie Robinson and other famous writers, civil rights activists, and political leaders responded, as well as ordinary citizens. The book is a compilation of new essays and some from the original program. Some of these essays are amazing. Some of them I don't understand. But one in particular stood out to me. It's written by Robert A. Heinlein, a writer and Navy war veteran. In his essay, he talks about his belief in the everyday, ordinary person. He says that "for every criminal, there are ten thousand honest, decent, kindly men. If it were not so, no child would live to grow up. Business could not go from day to day. Decency is not news. It is buried in the obituaries, but is a force stronger than crime."
I know I'm not that important in the world of television, but sitting behind the switcher everyday and listening to story after story of death, tragedy, and unspeakable crime, you have to compartmentalize your thoughts to get the job done. When all you hear is negative, reading things like this after a hard day of work is very emotional. I first read this essay back in June. It was the week of the sofa super store fire where 9 local firemen died. Everyone at work was emotionally exhausted and were all on edge. The stress of that week was unbelievable. Wes was working around the clock. No one could sleep. I can't even imagine what the local media in NY went through during and after 9-11. Even though most of us didn't know the 9 guys, we knew someone who did or we related to it in some other way or because the store was less than a mile away from our station. The fact that it could have happened anywhere and to anyone affected us, I think. I read this essay that week and I cried. I was on the treadmill, running and crying.
The fire was the day after Father's day. My birthday was the following Sunday. I was looking forward to NOT working that weekend. On Friday when I was driving home (late because the public memorial service was carried live) I was physically and emotionally exhausted. I texted Wes to tell him I was going home (He was working) and then called Mom. She knew about all that was going on and I told her I was really tired and was looking foward to not working. She nearly cried when she told me that she was only three hours away. I almost had a wreck!! It couldn't have come at a more perfect time. It was comforting that she was here. It was possibly the hottest weekend of the summer, but we had a great time and the stress just went away completely. It was the best birthday present ever.
The reason I'm writing this is because I am almost finished with the book and I think it is something that everyone should read. The website has a more in depth history of the NPR program as well as other essays. I was moved by this book and the essays in it, and I know that other people will be as well.
Okay, enough sob story, I'm going to the gym........ :)

Running on empty
So I'm sitting here having an Alias marathon. Not to belittle the best show ever, but I haven't been to the gym in like 2 weeks. I can't run because of my foot surgery and I'm going CRAZY!!! My friend at work is a 12 time marathoner (yes, I'm jealous) and he did a short race this weekend. I did one the weekend before my surgery. What aggravates me is that for the next three or four weekends, there are big races (popular ones with thousands of people participating and the courses go through downtown and over some other major roads). I want to be out there SO bad... But I can't. It's depressing.......
To top it all off, I scheduled my right foot surgery for the end of December. Which means that it will be many many months before I can start running seriously again. I'm going to try to do one before the surgery if I can. At least a 5K. If I can't run it, I'll at least walk it. For old times sake.
So last night I got 3 hours sleep. (I have to be at work at 3:30 am. I do the morning show.) It was worth it because me & Wes went downtown. We went to this ghost theater show. It was a bit cheesy, but free. Afterwards, we went to a new restaurant. New for us anyway. It sits near the cruise ship terminal. Nice place. So we decided to do this once a month. Go find a restaurant that we've haven't tried and take a stroll downtown. Walking around downtown at night was nice. There's not that many tourists and the tourist package peddlers aren't all over the place yelling at you to come see there new hotel. (I hate those people!)

Here we go....
Okay, My friend Beth inspired me to start a blog. I never really thought of doing this before. After thinking about it for a couple of days, I decided on a name. For those of you who didn't know, I'm a "BIG" JJ Abrams fan. JJ is the creator of ALIAS, LOST and many other great shows. He has also directed several movies. Page 47 is part of a plot line in ALIAS. (The Rambaldi book had a page 47 that revealed the prophecy involving Sydney... Sydney was taken to room #47 during her missing two years, etc.) Just my way of trying to be creative. Sorry if it doesn't make since. I like it.
Anyway, as you can already tell, I am a TV nerd. Working in TV will do that to ya. I wouldn't say that was "married" to the job, just the outcome. (I'm married to Wes :) .....) Don't ever sit with me and watch the news or anything else. I'll spoil it for you.
I guess I should introduce myself a little better than that, huh? Okay. I'm Evelyn (or Ev, it doesn't matter). Wes & I have been married for 2 1/2 years. We live in Charleston, SC. I was born and raised in Mississippi and I'd give anything to go back there right now. Wes was an Air Force child and lived all over. Our parents live in the same county in MS, about 20 miles away from each other. But that's not how we met. We met at the TV station in a nearby city where we both worked. Leaving MS was a hard thing to do. The reason we left is because you can't make any money in TV in smalltown, USA. After working in Alabama for a few years, we made our way here. It's a nice place, but it's not home. It's way too far from home too!! I've only been home three times this year. Some people may think that's a lot. But I'm a homebody. When we lived in AL, we would go home twice a month!
So anyway, Wes and I work, work and work some more. Our schedules are very different right now. We don't have a lot of time off together, so what we do have we spend it together. It was easier before because we worked at the same station. Now we don't. So we don't have the same friends anymore. But we are doing our best. Last night, a guy I work with had a get-together. Wes finally met all the folks from work I've been talkin' about. I've met a few of his co-workers. I play softball for our station and he is going to play on his stations' Dodgeball team. I was going to play, but I had foot surgery last week and I won't be 100% in time. They play two leagues, so I might play in the spring.
Alright, so if you're reading this, then that probably means that you read the email I sent you! Thanks!!! I try my best to stay in touch with everyone, but it's hard because not everyone has email or checks it regularly. I don't know everyone's phone numbers and it would take all day to call everyone and honestly, wouldn't you get tired of repeating yourself a hundred times? :) Plus it's been so long since I've seen anybody, that communication becomes an "out of sight, out of mind" scenario. I know everyone's busy with their own lives. That's why I thought this might be a good thing to do. When you have time, stop by and see what's going on... Start your own blog and I'll do the same!!

Phoebe says Hi! (Our cat) She just walked across the keyboard...
So right now, I'm going to go and catch up on my TiVo for the week and sit around the house with my stitched up foot propped up... I had surgery (left foot) to straighten up my toes so when I'm 40, hopefully I'll be able to walk normally without pain. My grandmother has the same problem, only she never got her feet fixed and she can barely walk. I'm trying to prevent that from happening to me. My right foot will most probably be done in December.
PS. I hate stitches!! The thought of them in my own skin makes my stomach knot up. My Mom's a nurse, she lives for this stuff!! She thinks I'm crazy. (I'm a Kowall, what can I say!!) I'm going to throw up now.
